Planet Hollywood Vegas Hosts Miss America Pageant; Hagan Crowned Champ

Las Vegas has been the home of the Miss America Pageant since 2006, when the competition moved from Atlantic City to find a new home at the Entertainment Capital of the World.

The Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino is the scene of the pageant, and this past Saturday, January 12, Mallory Hagan was crowned the 2013 champion after the 92nd annual competition that aired live on ABC hosted by Brooke Burke Charvet.

Hagan was Miss New York and is a student at The Fashion Institute of Technology. She edged out first runner-up Ali Rogers, Miss South Carolina.

The big prize for winning Miss America is a $50,000 scholarship, but Hagan will be quite busy during her reign. She will travel around the country speaking to various audiences and acting as ambassador for a non-profit organization that raises money for children’s hospitals. Hagan’s official platform isĀ “Stop it Now-Child Sexual Abuse,” a message she will spread from coast to coast (source).

The competition is much more than just looks, as contestants are judged in a number of categories. The different portions are the Personal Interview, Talent, Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimsuit, Evening Wear and Onstage Question (source).

As Miss New York, Hagan reclaimed the title for the East coast. Four out of the previous five years, Miss America hailed from the Midwest.
